Roan is a Selkie, a Celtic mythological creature said to come ashore on the night of the full moon and shed his or her seal skin, taking on human form. It is said that if a fisherman finds the skin of a female selkie, she must become his wife, for she can't return to the sea without her skin. The children of these marriages were recognizable by their dark coloring and webbed fingers or toes.
